Getting started 2: Running trains

Time for a bit of fun as a change of pace... Take the circle from step 1, or load a ready-made one: File → Example Plans…, folder Tutorial, plan tutorial2.

Putting a train on the track

The vehicles are on the right, in the object panel. Drag one of them onto the circle. While you guide it over the track, Raily shows a preview of the whole train in the position it would take. That way you can see, before you let go, whether it's right.

The direction of travel follows the direction in which you move the train.

Running

Start animation sets everything moving; the same button stops it again. The train keeps going round for as long as the animation runs.

Switch the animation off while planning

You can plan with the animation running, but it's usually easier to switch it off. Some elements behave differently in planning mode and in "play" mode.

Riding along

Cockpit view puts you in the train. If you have several trains, you can pick the "active" one from the list at the bottom right.

Key Effect
↑ faster
↓ slower, then backwards
Shift+↑/↓ much faster / much slower

The same keys also control a walker or a camera, see Walking and cameras.

Throwing switches

Load tutorial2b from the same folder. The circle now has a switch, and with it a decision: where does the train go?

Drive up to the switch in the cockpit and press Space. That throws the next switch ahead.
