Backup and recovery
Raily backs up every open plan in the background, even one that has never been saved: at most every 30 seconds, and only when something has changed. A floppy disk briefly blinks in the status bar with "Backup".
A backup is not a save: the plan file stays as it was, and Unsaved changes remains shown.
Every backup from the last ten minutes is kept; after that it's thinned out: first one every five minutes, after a day one every four hours, after a month one per week, after a year one per month.
Where they live
| Location | |
|---|---|
| Browser | in the browser's own storage, separate per browser and profile. Clear browsing data removes them too |
| Desktop app | in the app data folder. Raily icon → About… shows the path under "Where your files are kept" and opens the folder |
On startup
If a plan has a backup newer than its last save, Raily reports "Recover Unsaved Work": after a crash, a power outage, a closed tab.
The arrow in the row restores the newest version; clicking the plan shows the older ones. The recovered plan shows Unsaved changes until you save it, and no backup is deleted in the process. Close leaves everything as it is; the prompt comes back at the next start.
By hand
In the Help menu, right at the bottom:
| Entry | Shows |
|---|---|
| Versions of This Plan… | the versions of the open plan. Greyed out for a plan that was never saved |
| All Backed-Up Plans… | every plan with backups, including ones never saved and ones from earlier sessions |
Restoring opens the version in a new window or tab. The current work is left untouched.
Cleaning up
In All Backed-Up Plans…, Trim to latest state trims the checked plans to their newest version, Delete selected plans removes their backups. The file of a saved plan is left untouched.
Plans that were never saved, whose backups are older than a week and together take up space, Raily offers to delete on its own at startup. No deletes nothing and never asks about these plans again.
Save under a name you can find again
The backup is a safety net against crashes, not a substitute for Save As…. A plan that exists only as a backup can disappear during cleanup.
