When something doesn't work
Almost everything that suddenly “stops working” is a toggle that got switched at some point. This page is organized by what you see.
Nothing snaps anymore
| What you see | Cause |
|---|---|
| A pole, signal or annotation won't bind to the track | Snap to Special Points is off. This toggle applies to all targets that belong to an object, including the track under a pole |
| Still not, even then | The track is on a hidden layer. Whatever isn't drawn is not a snap target |
| Everything just hangs off the pointer | Snapping off is latched, one of the toggles in touch mode |
| The target isn't offered | The snap distance counts in screen pixels. Zoom in closer |
| The magnet icon is missing | It only exists in 2D, and only with rulers switched on. The settings are also in Settings |
See Snapping.
The object is in the wrong place
| What you see | Cause |
|---|---|
| It's stuck in the hill, or floating | Snap to Ground is off |
| Everything new arrives too high up | The work plane is not at zero |
| It needs to sit at an exact height | Translate mode, anchor on the underside |
I can't select it
| Check | |
|---|---|
| Layer locked | A locked layer is drawn, but not selectable. See Layers |
| Layer hidden | Then it's simply not there |
| You're one level down | The orange notice at the top of the plan means clicks only hit the parts of one element. Esc takes you back out; see Groups |
The numbers don't add up
Every length is off by the factor of my scale. The Model scale / Real-world scale toggle at the top of the property panel is set differently than you think; without an editor open, Model scale for lengths and sizes in the settings applies.
The plan scale is wrong. Set it early, in the Plan Properties. Scaling does not rescue a plan set to the wrong scale: tracks are catalog parts and do not scale.
The plan looks different than yesterday
A track looks the same despite a changed rail display, bedding is missing everywhere, or names appear everywhere. These are the display overrides under View. They take priority over the individual track, apply to every plan, and survive a restart. See Rail display.
A red bar lies over a flex track. It is bent tighter than the plan's smallest curve radius.
Nothing moves
Check Start animation. As long as it isn't running, nothing moves — even a figure's arrow keys have no effect, and the clock stands still. Whether it's running is saved with the plan; an older plan opens paused.
A train disappears while running
You slowly ran into another train, and Raily coupled the two. Run into it too fast, and one derails. See Placing trains.
The view won't move
You're stuck in cockpit view or follow view, where the camera travels with the vehicle. 3D view brings back the free camera.
If the mouse wheel pans instead of zooming, that's a toggle; see Navigation.
I don't see anything in the plan
2D view always zooms to the whole plan.
If the plan shrinks to a few pixels doing this, an element is sitting far outside the layout — often from a transposed digit while moving something. Ctrl+Z usually catches the move. Earlier states are under Help → Versions of This Plan…, see Backup and recovery.
Raily won't let me continue
“Free tier size limit reached.” See License.
A track won't mirror. For a left-hand turnout, the catalog must contain a matching right-hand turnout. The message shown after mirroring tells you what happened instead.
